How’s everyone’s 4/20 szn going? Wherever you work in weed, however close or distant you feel to this holiday, the energy in the cannabis airspace is charged right now, and I clink my coffee mug to yours in solidarity. We got this.
At the same time, let’s not get too lost in the commerce of cannabis this month. I know, I know—this is a cannabis business newsletter. But 4/20 is 4/20 because people love weed. Long before anyone was giving discounts or hosting fun events, it was joyously and creatively celebrated. Holding on to that spirit is the secret to executing a successful 4/20 campaign, imo. So in the vein of weed-loving nostalgia, I’m sharing one of my absolute favorite past Broccoli pieces this Friday tracing the mythic roots of a bit of stoner lore, along with some anecdotes from friends and followers about their favorite parts of 4/20. Subscribe to feel the love.
One-Hitters: Cannabis News at a Glance
Did you catch a glimpse of YSL's new fragrance headset? The scientific sensors help the wearer identify their ideal fragrance by interpreting brain signals in response to different scents. In light of expanding research into how aromatic terpenes contribute to cannabis’ effects—and the ongoing lack of qualified research on individual varietals—I predict some version of that futuristic headset will be part of a high-tech dispensary experience somewhere sooner than later. Until mainstream science catches up on cannabis research, our noses are one of our best bets while navigating different strains. I know I have particular scent profiles or individual notes that I seek when perusing buds.
If you’d like to better understand the testing realm, Cannabis Industry Journal published a helpful—and disconcerting—piece outlining just how wildly testing requirements vary state-to-state and just how difficult it is to make sure everyone’s playing by the rules.
A proposed bill in California suggests cannabis products should have a more prominent, uniform warning label citing the dangers of irresponsible cannabis use, akin to the warnings on cigarette packs.
A far more extreme bill addressing cannabis safety in Alabama would require women from ages 25 to 50 to produce a negative pregnancy test from a doctor or medical lab conducted within 48 hours before purchasing medical marijuana. The National Advocates for Pregnant Women (NAPW) has already called the bill "blatantly unconstitutional and unprecedented," but sadly, we’re living in boom times for legislators eager to overregulate women’s bodies.
Dispensaries may be cash-only by necessity, but cashless ATMs are becoming a common solution for running debit cards at checkout. Tiffany Kary did a deep dive for Bloomberg on this booming loophole.
RSO (Rick Simpson Oil), a potent, medicinally-rich form of cannabis oil, is beloved by chronic pain sufferers and high-tolerance budtenders alike. It’s often packaged in a syringe, making it an intimidating first choice for newbies interested in medicinal applications. To make it more accessible and raise awareness about RSO as an alternative treatment for multiple sclerosis, JARS Cannabis teamed up with RISE and Mitten Canna Co. They are offering interested customers the opportunity to try one free 1g RSO syringe at a handful of dispensaries throughout March.
Ty Haney, founder of athleisure brand Outdoor Voices, simultaneously entered the Metaverse and the CBD space last week. Her new platform, Try Your Best, enables brands to collect input from customers in exchange for rewards like NFTs, and it launched alongside Joggy, her sporty new CBD brand (and really fun animated visuals).
Sonoma Hills Farm debuted a special 4/20 AirBnB listing at their farm in Petaluma, California.
